The art of creative recycling: recycled sail bags as an example

What is recycling art?

When we talk about the art of recycling, we are referring to the creative reuse of waste material, which allows us to give new life to materials and/or objects by transforming them into useful, colorful and unique creations.

Art of recycling artists

The relationship between art and “waste” began to develop in the early 1900s.

Initially, these were just extreme gestures towards a world focused solely and exclusively on the search for beauty.

It was in the 1960s that artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Alberto Burri and Piero Manzoni began to use common materials and objects, giving them a new purpose.

Art and image recycling

In French New Realism this new art form began to assert itself, creating works that were not simple decorations, but a message to the consumerist society of the time.

Contemporary art and recycling

As the years go by, environmental awareness becomes stronger and stronger , leading to the birth of real art forms such as Trash Art and Wast Art .

Recycle items to be thrown away

What we consider “waste” can be a real resource, from shoe boxes to fabric processing residues to kitesurf sails deteriorated by time and saltiness.

From dangerous waste to fashionable object

A finished sail, according to current legislation, is to be considered a hazardous waste, therefore it should be disposed of in specialised landfills.

Very often, however, they are thrown away as normal, more or less recyclable waste.

This is why we at RockWave thought of giving new life to kitesurf sails that have now passed away by creating fashionable and sustainable bags, holdalls and sacks.
